How about another huge writeup since I don't regularly write journals anymore? I find I actually have enough interesting stuff to write about if I do a quarterly or bi-monthly update, hahaha.
Besides being buried at work, life has been chugging right along. By the time I get home most days I just take want a nap. This is my life, haha. For whatever reason we were behind by a week or two this school year so believe it or not, I'm still processing books that were delivered during the summer (teachers are on the 10 month schedule so I wouldn't have been paid to work the summer). That and the high school was running summer school in our building so I couldn't even be in my office/library anyway. It was weird. But I survived the paperwork, workshops, some of the processing, the open house, bookfair, and orientations and am already jumping into research units with classes. So busy, but I guess it's job security for now.
Anyway, AnimeUSA was a good time for me. It has always been one of my most fun/relaxing cons and this year was no different. I needed the break from work and really enjoyed hanging with friends and even drank sunshine (really, that's what it was called). I am not sure I like it being so early since my "con year" ends so soon now but I guess it is what it is. On Friday I wore my Crow costume and did the Hall Cosplay contest. Special shout out to the handful of people who recognized the character and were super excited. I didn't think anyone would know who I was cosplaying since it's so obscure. You guys made my day.
Saturday I wore my Ciel costume and was fortunate enough to have an impromptu photoshoot with Chi-o Photography
. He was super nice and I love that I was finally able to get some more pics of the costume before I sell it.
Wearing Ciel for a few hours was tiring so I went into ultimate-comfort mode and changed into Jack Frost. It was an eerie feeling, I didn't see many other Guardians cosplayers on Saturday, but perhaps they were in their fancy-pants Saturday costumes whereas I changed out of mine and wanted to be comfy.
I pretty much was able to walk into the Masquerade without trouble and found a seat easily. The show was aight and there were a few excellent skits. Mostly my friends and I try to get in there when people leave to see the awards. I never expect to place in craftsmanship contests because even when I finish something that was difficult but finish-able, it feels like I could've done things much differently. A "win" to me is just having attentive judges to work with who are fun to talk to (which thankfully, AUSA's judging panel for craftsmanship have always been wonderful to talk to). Regardless, I was pleasantly surprised and glad to be wrong. I ended up winning Best of Friday for craftsmanship with Crow. That was super exciting. So exciting that my friends and I immediately ran back to our hotel room to drop off my trophy and do what we love: eat. We went to one of the sushi places and gorged upon... I don't even know, a ton of deliciousness basically.
A pic of me waiting... waiting for food.
I also bought a surprising amount of stuff at AUSA. I usually don't buy much at conventions but I found a Hyrule Historia book, SnK pencil bag, SnK phone charms, and another Alvin (ToX) phone charm because I need all of the Alvins. Sunday was last-minute running through the dealer's room, packing my car, and going back to Noodle & Co. for more pad thai. The crappy thing about Sunday was that I had to go back to work the next day and my car battery died. I don't know why or what happened but I had to call AAA to come to my rescue. Thankfully after jumping it, the battery held its charge and I was technically delayed only about 3 hours. Not bad, I got home around midnight which is about when I'd start signing off the internets and going to bed anyway. So no internets, took my shower, and went to bed.
The next weekend, I was out in the western part of the state to do a photoshoot with friends
and photographer, Kristen Rice
, who is sweet as can be and fun to work with. I had originally intended to con one of said friends into taking pics of my Crow costume since I didn't get any at AnimeUSA, and the next day at our paid shoot we would be doing Odin Sphere stuff. Being in a rush, I grabbed my Cornelius costume and left out a rather essential bit of it, the belt. You can't easily shoop in that belt. I was frustrated with myself since I usually pack so carefully. Thankfully I was able to still get pics at the shoot, but with Crow instead of Cornelius. Anyway, those are where the amazing photos of my costume are from, obviously too epic to be at a con. I have a few more pics to share of this but I won't inundate too much.
I have yet to find an abandoned theme park I can get into, but I will keep looking. Also, I found my Cornelius belt, it was stuck on a shelf in my closet. The paint sort of melted to the shelf and to the black vinyl, great. It was an easy cleanup though so I can't complain too much about that. Still, would've been epic if I had had it with me when we were supposed to do Odin Sphere stuff.
Moral of the story? Had a great time in my Crow costume, maybe I should finish my Seto costume and lend one to a friend so we can do Fragile Dreams stuff.
What's on tap
I was invited as a guest to Aselia Con 2
. This was also super surprising since I pretty much keep my head down and just do what I do. I never expect people to take much notice and when they do, it's flattering but intimidating to be honest. Regardless, I accepted their gracious invite and am working on a cosplay panel and maybe a panel for funsies. Not sure about a second panel. That's in March so I think I have time to fix up 1 older costume and make 1 new one that's airline-friendly. If anyone has any ideas/suggestions about what you like hearing at cosplay panels, let me know. I've run a few, but like to tailor each panel for different audiences.
Working slowly on stuff for Katsucon I suppose.
- Elsa from Frozen (OMG A GIRL COSPLAY, LET ALONE A DISNEY PRINCESSY ONE)
- Sandy kigu from Rise of the Guardians
- Lon'qu from Fire Emblem
For Aselia Con (since I can't bring huge costumes)
- Alvin from Tales of Xillia (School outfit)
On a shifting schedule
- Colonial Jack from Rise of the Guardians
- Finish Legolas costume
- Toothiana from Rise of the Guardians (GETTIN OUTTA CONTROL WITH ANOTHER GIRL COSPLAY)
- Mulan (OMG AND ANOTHER)
- King Edgar from Final Fantasy 6
On a "When I finish it...." schedule
- Default Kratos Aurion from Tales of Symphonia
- Eva from Magnetic Rose
I'm starting to think I should just sell the pieces of Eva. I don't really feel interested in finishing her ball gown anymore. Maybe I will find a new project that uses that kind and color of satin though. Hrrr.
Also, adding and selling more of my stuff since it literally does not fit in my house, seriously I have had to get rid of furniture because there's just not as much space as anticipated. Weird how moving can force you to streamline things. I'm adding wigs and more cosplay things and will be adding some more manga/doujin and perhaps artbooks. I'm also selling most of my cosplays over 2 years old (a la Ciel, the Drocells, Jade, Alto, etc.) so if there's one you're interested in that I haven't listed, send a note.
